Website: Guest House 1568
Located in the heart of Cluj-Napoca, just a short walk from the city’s main square, Guest House 1568 operates within the House of Religious Freedom, a fully restored historic building owned by the Hungarian Unitarian Church. The guesthouse combines modern comfort with the unique atmosphere of one of the city’s most significant heritage sites.
The building, once serving as the Unitarian episcopal residence, preserves important Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements, with its earliest sections dating from the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Its name recalls the historic Diet of Torda of 1568, which proclaimed religious freedom and the right of communities to choose their own ministers. Following a decade-long restoration project, the complex reopened in 2018 and received the prestigious Europa Nostra Award in 2022 for excellence in cultural heritage conservation.
Guest House 1568 offers accommodation in eleven guest rooms and three spacious apartments. All units feature private bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, television, desk, and wardrobe. The apartments are additionally equipped with full kitchens, making them ideal for longer stays. Complimentary coffee, tea, drinking water, and microwave facilities are available in the common areas.
House of Religious Freedom
Beyond its accommodation facilities, the building serves as an important cultural and educational center. Visitors can explore permanent and temporary exhibitions, attend conferences and cultural events, visit the Institute for the Study of Religious Freedom, or browse the Idea Bookstore located within the complex.
Bistro 1568
The inner courtyard is home to Bistro 1568, a restaurant inspired by Transylvania’s diverse culinary heritage. The menu brings together Hungarian, Saxon, Romanian, Jewish, and Armenian culinary traditions in a contemporary setting, complemented by local wines, specialty coffees, craft beers, and a variety of vegetarian and gluten-free options.
