Ferenc Balázs – Our Contemporary for 125 Years

Memorial Year Opens in Mészkő (Cheia)

The Hungarian Unitarian Church officially opened the Ferenc Balázs Memorial Year, which commemorates the 125th anniversary of his birth, with a press event held in Mészkő (Cheia).  The event offered an introduction to his multifaceted legacy and outlined a year-long program intended to engage the entire life of the Church throughout 2026.

The motto of the memorial year, “Ferenc Balázs – Our Contemporary for 125 Years,” reflects the conviction that his life and work continue to speak to the present and offer meaningful perspectives for today’s questions.

The opening took place in Mészkő (Cheia), near the Turda Gorge, where Ferenc Balázs served as minister. The location itself carries strong symbolic meaning: his intellectual and community-building legacy remains a living presence here, preserved and continued by the local community.

In his address, Bishop István Kovács emphasized that in a year dedicated to mission, it is especially important to focus on a life that helps interpret and live out the Church’s calling today. He highlighted the richness of Ferenc Balázs’s legacy and the ongoing task of rediscovering and reinterpreting it in light of present-day challenges.

Presenting the concept of the memorial year, mission counselor Norbert Zsolt Rácz noted that Ferenc Balázs’s life cannot be confined to traditional commemorative frameworks. Instead, the year is structured around eleven distinct roles through which his work can be approached and experienced in a contemporary context.

From a local perspective, minister Róbert Zoltán Bálint spoke about the enduring presence of this legacy in Mészkő (Cheia). Over recent decades, the community has consciously returned to Ferenc Balázs’s ideals, drawing from them in rebuilding its identity and strengthening its communal life.

The program also included an exhibition of archival materials, offering insight into his life and work, as well as a guided village walk through locations closely connected to his activity. These included the parish house he built in 1932 and the church whose present form reflects his vision. The walk concluded at his grave, where participants paid their respects.

Throughout the memorial year, the Hungarian Unitarian Church will integrate the spirit of Ferenc Balázs’s work into a wide range of programs, including youth and family events, educational initiatives, community gatherings, and a planned academic conference. A key undertaking will be the publication of his previously unpublished work The Religion of the New Man.

The opening event in Mészkő (Cheia) marked the beginning of a process that invites both reflection and renewed engagement with a legacy that continues to offer guidance for the present.
